HIKERS WILL MEET AT 9:00am  AT THE CENTRE

 

Trekkers meet at the Parkinson Activity Centre,1700 Parkinson Way, at 8:30 am on Wednesdays unless otherwise indicated.

Those wishing to meet at the hike start should phone the leader to get exact location.  

Wear hardy hiking shoes or boots, and bring water, hiking sticks and suitable clothing for weather. Most hikes will be under 2 hours in length and a stop for refreshments will be indicated. Please note, these hikes are not easy strolls as most participants come to get the exercise. There will be hills and a moderately fast pace, and hikes are subject to change as conditions change.

October 2021

October 1 – Special Trek Friday Wilden to Fire lookout:  9:00 AM PAC. Good hiking boots, poles and extra water are recommended. Meet at Trail head at 9:20 AM on Summer Wood.  Please pack your lunch with extra water as we will have lunch at the fire lookout cabin. The views are incredible at the top and along the trail. Approximately 2.5 hours. Directions Clifton, right on Rio to Upper Canyon Drive, left on Echo Ridge Drive, left on Summer Wood, Park on Summer Wood by Skyland Drive. This hike is advanced from moderate to difficult as climbing several hills. October 6 – Okanagan River Channel in Penticton: Meet at the PAC at 9:00 A.M. to carpool to Penticton, parking in the Rose Garden Parking Lot next to the SS Sicamous on Riverside Drive. Or meet us there at 10:00. This is a flat loop along gravel trails edging the channel to the K’amcnik Floodplain re-engagement project and learn about the Penticton Channel Habitat Recovery. Coffee to follow at either Tim Hortons or Starbucks close by. For those wishing to have lunch, Salty’s is just around the corner from the parking lot. October 13 – Knox Mountain: Meet at the PAC at 9:00 A.M. with your sturdy hiking boots, poles and water. Great views of Wilden Sky, Glenmore Valley, Dilworth and Kathleen Lake. Meet at Trailhead 9:20 AM on Woodpark Court in Magic Estates. The walk is Approx. 1.45 hours, moderate trek.  Take Clement, Clifton, left on Rio, right on Woodpark, left on Woodpark Court. October 15 – Special advanced Trek to McDougall Rim: This hike is difficult with a steady climb uphill to a wonderful viewpoint of Rose Valley Reservoir and Okanagan Lake. Good hiking boots, poles, food, and water are recommended. Carpool from PAC at 9:00 AM, meet at Trailhead at 9.30 AM. Take Hwy 97, turn right on Bartley Rd and then left on Shannon Lake Road. Watch for Bartley Rd on your right again and follow it along a single-lane road to the (unmarked) dirt parking lot just past a vineyard. October 20 – Kal Crystal Waters Trail: Car pool at 9:00AM from PAC, meet at Trailhead at 9.45 AM, head towards Vernon on Hwy 97 for approx. 40km. Look for the sign for Kekuli Bay Provincial Park turn right and take the first right and head down the hill. At the bottom of the hill look for the children’s playground and picnic tables on the left and park in front of them.  There are toilets here. From the parking lot the first 20 minutes is a good steady climb up to the KCW trail and then another 20 minutes on an undulating trail before the final half is an easy downhill to the lake. We will return on the flat Rails to Trails beside the lake to the park. Approx. 1hr 45mins. October 22 – Special Trek Friday Myra Tamarack (Larch):  9:00 AM PAC Good hiking boots, poles and extra water are recommended. Meet at Trailhead at 9:30 AM on June Springs.  Please pack your lunch with extra water as we will have lunch along the trail. The colours are incredible at the top and along the trail. Approximately 3.0 hours. Directions KLO, McCulloch, right on June Springs Road, park across from Angel Springs trail head. This hike is advanced from moderate to difficult as climbing several hills. For more information call Ed Letkeman at 250-808-7869.

October 27 – Trekkers meet at the centre at 9AM and car pool to Guisachan and Charolais.  Park along Charolais and meet outside the Fountains at 9:10 am.  We will explore alleys, parks and beaches in the area with coffee to follow at #45, 2200 Gordon Drive (The Fountains).  This is an easy all flat walk, which will take approximately 1.5 hours. September 2021

 

September 1 – Rose Valley Lake: Meet at PAC at 8:30 AM to carpool, if comfortable, to Rose Valley Regional Park in West Kelowna or meet at the trailhead at 8:45 AM. Drive across the bridge, turn right on Horizon Drive and go 3.3. Km to Westlake Rd. Turn left onto Westlake Rd and park in the lot for Rose Valley Park on the right hand side of the road. A moderate trek that takes us to a gorgeous lake in an equally gorgeous surrounding. There is uphill and downhill portions to the trek so wear hiking boots and bring poles. Steep in places. September 8 – Westbank Centre Loop: Meet at PAC at 8:30 AM and carpool, (if you are comfortable) or meet at the trailhead at 9:00 AM. From PAC take Hwy 97 across the bridge into Westbank. Turn left on Old Okanagan Hwy and drive to Johnson Bentley Pool, parking in the lower parking lot. We will trek down Brown Rd to the Glen Canyon Park entrance all the way to Gellatly Bay and back up via Angus Drive and a short trail. There are several stairs through the canyon and a gradual but uphill section towards the end of the trek. Approx. 1.5hr – 5.7 km. (For more information call Jan Appleton at 778-215-0312).

 

September 15 – Black Mountain Regional Park: Meet at PAC at 8:30 AM or alternatively at trailhead at 9:00 AM. From Highway 97 turn right into McCurdy Rd. Right into Tower Ranch Drive. Street Parking on Tower Ranch Drive. Trail head is on the right hand side before the houses. Google maps does not give clear directions to this particular trailhead so better to follow the above instructions. Easy 1.5 hour hike with an initial moderately steep incline. September 22 – Scenic Canyon: Carpool from PAC at 8:30 AM Trailhead 9:00 AM. This trek is moderate with several hills. Good hiking boots, poles, and water are recommended.  Take KLO / McCulloch, left on Field Road, park at the trailhead parking lot.  Great view of the Pinnacle and the ovens approximately 1.75 hours. September 29 – Kettle Valley Trestles: Meet at PAC at 8.30 AM and 9:00 AM at the trailhead, carpool to the parking lot.  This is an easy flat hike about 1hr 30mins with great views (we hope) so bring your camera.  It can be cool up there so make sure you pack a jacket.  Coffee/lunch afterwards TBA.  If you need directions or more info please call Martyn at 250-862-8753.

July 7 – Lower Glenmore area. We will start and finish at the Centre and it will give people a chance to renew their memberships.  The hike will take us around the lower Glenmore area approx. 1hr 20 mins.  It’s still going to be hot next week according to the forecast so I can always make it shorter if necessary. July 14 – Bellevue Creek, Woodhaven Park, Lower Mission Ridge. Meet at PAC at 8:30 A.M.  trailhead 8:50 A.M. We will trek from Bullock Road.  Park on Frederick and Bullock off Raymer Road which is Gordon Drive south of De Hart, left on Raymer Road, left on Bullock.  The trek is easy, Approx. 1.6 hours. July 21 – Gellatly Bay to Pebble Beach. Meet at PAC at 8:30 A.M trailhead  at 9 A.M  Note Gellatly Road closures during the weekdays in July** Alternate route: Take Hwy 97 towards West Kelowna. Turn left onto Boucherie Rd and follow for 6.7 km. Take a sharp left into right into the Rotary Park parking lot. This is an easy, flat 1.5 hour walk along the lake to Pebble Beach and back. Special Trek Thursday July 22 – BX Falls.
 Meet at PAC at 8:30 A.M. trailhead 9:30 A.M. This is a spectacular peaceful hike mostly under the cover of mature trees. Beside the falls there are two steep sets of stairs up and new steps down with mostly new bridges on the trail, one tricky spot along the creek. Approximately 2.5 hours moderate trek. Bring your lunch/ snack and water as we will eat by the falls. Alexanders Pub optional after trek in Coldstream. Hwy. 97, right 48th Avenue East, it becomes Silver Star Rd. Friday November 6, 2020 Special advance Trek – Gladstone Trail Peachland: 9:00AM at PAC This hike is difficult with a climb to see old mine claim signs, meet Old Pat/Pete on the mountain above Peachland. Good hiking boots, poles, and water are recommended. Direction Peachland, right Princeton Ave. right Somerset Ave. left Gladstone Rd. left Victoria St. right Harrington Cres Trail Head 9:30. Please pack your lunch in your backpack with extra water as we will have lunch with a great lake view. The views are incredible along the trail so bring your camera. Approximately 3 hours. November 11 2020 Mount Baldy: Meet at PAC at 9:00AM or meet at the trailhead at 9:10AM with your sturdy hiking boots and poles. This hike has lots of up and down stretches. We will climb up to the summit to see the panoramic views from the top and then slowly wind our way down through a forested area. Take Dilworth drive or Summit Drive to the intersection of Dilworth and Summit. From there, head north on Rifle Rd towards the Greenery. Just past the condos turn right on Mt Baldy Rd and park on the side of the road. We will meet at the corner of Rifle and Mt Baldy. This hike is approximately 1 hour and 15 min. Coffee to follow TBA. Friday November 13, 2020 Goats Peak Special advanced Trek: 9:00AM meet and carpool from PAC. This hike is moderate to a difficult climb. Good hiking boots, poles and extra water are recommended. Carpool to Seclusion Bay Road in West Kelowna, take 97 through West Bank, stay in the left lane as left turn is before Draught Hill down to Peachland. Trailhead 9:30  Please pack your lunch. November 18 2020 Quail Ridge Linear Park: Carpool from Parkinson Activity Centre to Quail Ridge Subdivision. Left turn at Kelowna Airport Intersection onto Quail Ridge Blvd. Turn left on Quail Run Drive, right on Quail Lane and left on Quail Crescent. Friday Special – October 2 – Spion Kop. This hike is advanced from moderate to very difficult as we trek to the summit. Good hiking boots, poles, lunch, and extra water are recommended. Meet at PAC at 9:00 to travel to the West Trail Head off Carrs Landing Rd. Please pack your lunch with extra water as we will have lunch at the top. The lake and valley views are incredible along the trail. Approximately 3.5 hours. Take Okanagan Centre Road East, right Carrs Landing Rd., right Moberly, left on Forest Hills, right Townsend, left Northstar to Trail Head. Lv. approx. 9:30 AM from there. Wednesday, October 7 – Bellevue Creek Canyon Falls. Meet at the PAC at 9:00 AM. We will trek by the falls and along Bellevue Creek area. Directions to Crawford Estates: De Hart, Crawford right WestRidge, right Canyon Ridge, and park on Canyon Falls Court. Limited parking. Obey signs or you will be towed, also park on Canyon Ridge. Coffee will follow at PAC. The trek is easy / moderate with new safe steps down / up from the Canyon Falls. Approx. 1.75 hours. Wednesday, October 14 – Cemetery/Rail Trail. Meet at the PAC at 9:00 am. We will walk from the PAC, through the cemetery, onto the rail trail and then onto Dilworth Rd and back. Wednesday, October 21 – Rose Valley Reservoir. Trek down to reservoir and back up. Good hiking boots, poles and water are recommended. Meet at PAC at 9:00 AM to the end of West Kelowna Road by McPhail Court. Lv. approx. 9:20 at Trail Head. Take Westlake Road, left West Kelowna Road just pass the school to the end. Friday Special – Advanced Trek October 23 – Pincushion Mountain. This is a steep and rocky 2 km climb, not for the faint of heart. There is a flagpole at the peak, where there is also a picnic table and panoramic views. Good hiking boots, poles and water required. If desired, carpool from PAC at 9:00 AM. Or meet at the trailhead at 9:30 AM. From Hwy 97 turn right on Ponderosa Rd by the big peach in Peachland. Wind your way to the top of the road and park in a gravel parking lot on the left. Wednesday, October 28 – Oyama Loop. Meet at the PAC at 9:00 AM. We will drive north through Lake Country to Oyama. When leaving Lake Country take the turnoff to the right onto Pemelwash Parkway and travel about 6km until you come to a flashing red light and 4 way stop. Turn right and go about 500m until you see the Community Club on your left, park opposite. This is a new hike which will take us on trails and roads with one short climb. Approx.1 hr 30mins. SEPTEMBER 2020

September 2 – Paul’s Tomb: 8:30 AM – meet at PAC. 8:45 AM at Trail head. Take Spall or Gordon to Clement Avenue; take Clifton Road to the first light, left on Mountain Avenue to Mount Royal Drive, left on Royal View Drive to the end. Park at the trailhead by Knox Mountain. We will hike to Paul’s Tomb via the first lookout which is a moderate climb. The hike is about 1hr 45mins. Coffee to follow at PAC. September 9 – Kalamoir Regional Park: Meet at the PAC at 8:30 AM or at the trailhead. From PAC head over the bridge towards West Kelowna and at the far end of the bridge take the first exit onto Campbell Road. Follow Campbell Road to the crossroads then go straight ahead onto Benedick Road. The trail begins at the end of the road so park where possible making sure you do not block driveways. Our hike is all on trails, we will follow the lake on the way out before returning via the upper trail. Approx. 1hr 30mins. Please wear good boots, bring your poles, and something to drink. September 16 – Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park: Leave from Parkinson Activity Centre at 8:30 AM or meet at the trailhead at 9:15 am. Head towards Vernon on Highway 97. Turn right at the traffic light onto College Way (towards Coldstream). Turn right onto Kalamalka Rd. Turn right onto Kidston Rd. Follow Kidston Rd all the way. Continue past the red gate trailhead until you see a sign on the left “Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park”. Turn in at the sign to the parking lot. One and a half hour moderate walk with some inclines. September 23 – South Slopes Myra Park: Meet at the PAC at 8:30 AM. We will hike along several trails to Teddy Bear Junction. Take Benvoulin, Casorso, Bedford, park at the lot at the end of Stewart Road East past the hydro station in South East Kelowna. Coffee will follow at Urban Fare, Tim’s in the Mission, or back at PAC. September 30 – Horizon Drive Loop: Meet at the PAC at 8:30 AM or at the trailhead. Head south over the bridge and at the first light turn right onto Horizon Drive (opposite Boucherie Road). Go down the hill and where it sweeps to the left before heading uphill park here on the right. Our hike will take us along the trail before climbing up to Diamond View estate with great views down over the lake. AUGUST 2020

 

August 5 – Rails for Trails: Start at the PAC at 8:30 AM and walk up the Rails for Trails from there and back. Coffee to follow outside the PAC. For more information contact Chris Bischoff  at 250 470 7038.

 

August 12 – Hardy Falls and Renfrew Rd walk: Meet at the PAC at 8:30 AM or at the trailhead. Take Hwy 97 past Peachland and turn right on Hardy Rd just before Antlers Beach. Park at the end of the street close to the Hardy Falls Regional Park sign. This is a flat, short, and shaded walk to the falls. To make it a bit longer, I have added an additional walk along Renfrew Rd next to the falls. This a gentle uphill paved walk. Approx. 1 ¼ hr. August 26 – Mission Creek Regional Park: Meet at 8:30 at PAC or the EECO centre on Springfield Road. Our hike will take us on the trails around the park. Easy with some short climbs. Friday August 28 – K.L.O. Creek to Angel Springs: Meet at PAC at 8:30, Carpool from PAC (if comfortable) or meet at K.L.O. Creek trailhead at 8:50 AM. Take Benvoulin, left on K.L.O. to McCulloch, past Field Road and park just east of the bridge on McCulloch Road. Please carpool if comfortable as limited parking. You must have poles, good hiking boots. We will Trek along and cross the creek many times, very scenic difficult hike with a steep hill to Angel Springs. JULY 2020

July 8 – Johns Family Nature Conservancy (formally Cedar Mountain Regional Park) at 8:30 AM: To reach the trailhead, drive south on Lakeshore Dr. Continue straight onto Chute Lake Rd and then straight onto Upper Mission Drive. Continue to drive uphill another 2.1 km once you are on Upper Mission Drive, past Seton House of Prayer turnoff until you reach the City Limit sign. From there the road is gravel for 1.4 km where you will see the parking lot on the right. This area offers stunning views of the city and Kelowna Crags. There is some up and down to the trail including some stairs. This moderate walk will be about 1 ¼ hours. There is an outhouse along the path and little shade. July 15 – Shannon Lake circumnavigation at 8:30 AM: Meet at Shannon Lake Golf course entrance. Turn right off Hwy 97 on Bartley Rd (near Bylands nursery), then left on Shannon Lake Rd. Drive through the Shannon Lake golf course entrance and immediately park on the right hand side of the parking area. This is a lovely walk through Shannon Lake Golf course, and along the shoreline of Shannon Lake. There are a couple of short hills; and some steps down, otherwise it is mostly flat. (1hr 15 mins)  Coffee or lunch at the Shannon Lake golf course restaurant. July 22 – Knox Mountain Trek at 8:30 AM: Directions: Clement, Clifton Road, left on Rio, right Magic Drive, left on Avonlea Way. Park by the sunken park on Avonlea Way. We will hike to Kathleen Lake and across Knox Mountain. The trek is Approx. 1.75 hours, some moderate hills. Coffee will follow behind IGA on Kane Rd. Bring your lawn chair. July 29 – Okanagan Centre Lake Front at 8:30 AM: Meet at Okanagan Centre Park (address 11255 Okanagan Centre Rd, Lake Country). Travel north on Glenmore Rd. Left onto Seaton/Dick Rd (becomes Chase Rd). Left onto Camp and pass Grey Monk Winery. At the end of Camp turn left onto Okanagan Centre Rd. Travel for 500m and you will see a sign on the left ‘Okanagan Centre Park’ parking area which is where we will park (right next to the little museum). This is a flat 1.5 hour walk. June 3 – Quail Ridge woods walk at 8:30 AM:  Take Hwy 97 to Airport Way and turn left. Head to the traffic circle at the end of the road…then right along Quail Ridge Blvd. Left at the stop sign. Left at Quail Run Dr. Right on Quail Lane, left at Quail Cres. …park at the end of road. We will do a loop thru the woods .. Approx 1 – 1/4 hrs.  We can do a tailgate coffee at Tim’s next to Nesters , following walk. Leaders: Ken and Deb 778-363-1950.

June 10 – Brand’s Creek Linear Park at 8:30 AM: Head North on Glenmore Rd. and park on the outskirts of the IGA parking Lot on Kane Rd. This is an easy, flat 1.5 hour walk. June 17 – Mission Ridge/ Crawford at 8:30 AM: We will trek from base Mission Ridge at Bullock Road. Meet at the Trail Head – Directions: Gordon Drive south past DeHart, left on Raymer Road, left on Bullock. Park on Bullock and Fredrick off Raymer Road in the Lower Mission. We will have a chit chat on the sand dune over looking the lake for 20 minutes. Bring your water, coffee and a snack. The walk is moderate with some hills. Approx. 1.5 hours. June 24 – Rotary Park at Gellatly Bay at 8:30 AM: Head out on Highway 97 to West Kelowna. Turn left into Gellatly Rd. At the end of Gellatly Rd turn left onto Boucherie Rd and immediately right into a little slip road leading to the parking lot at Rotary Park. This is an easy, flat 1.5 hour  walk along the lake to the Gellatly Nut Farm and back. To follow:  Bring your own coffee, snack and lawn chairs.
